the replacement pldt baudtec
October 7, 2015, Wednesday
I was asleep. They said we lost our Internet connection. They power-cycled. The modem did not turn on. The modem is dead.
I called PLDT 172 this afternoon. They will send a technician to check and replace the modem. The price for the new modem will be added to our bill.
I also told them that our DSL connection has not be steady. They said they'll check that. The rep said he's hearing some static in the background while we're talking. They will check that too.

The pldt tech arrived this morning before 10 a.m. He replaced the dead red-orange zyxel with this white BaudTec modem/router. He made sure it connected and then he left. I do not know if he checked our line.
I gave up on setting it up with our linksys router. It would not give an IP to the wireless devices. I figured the linksys would have to be reset but I was tired and couldn't be bothered to make it work anymore. The linksys is old (WRT54G), had it for over 7 years. Time to retire.
Deteriorating PLDT modems
We first used the red-orange zyxel in June last year (2014). It broke yesterday. That's only 16 months.
Before that, we were using the black zyxel that worked far longer. It ran more or less 5 years before the pldt dsl light wouldn't stop blinking and then stopped lighting up at all.
This white baudtec, I wonder how long this will last.
Notes on the white BaudTec modem/router so far
Its vents are on the bottom. It is now sitting on a wide bottle cap so it can at least breathe (pictured above).
The tech said to turn it off if there's thunder and lightning.
So far, our connection is still unstable. Limited/no connectivity every now and then. It usually comes back within 5-15 minutes.
October 9, 2015, Friday evening
Day 2 with this new modem. Experienced limited/no connectivity this evening. When it still did not return after 15 minutes, I power-cycled. sigh.
*To power-cycle is to switch it off, wait a minute or two and then switch it on again.
