What is stupid?

Trying to reason with a stupid person is like trying to play chess with a pigeon that shits all over the board and then walks away acting like it's won. I read this somewhere and it stuck. Because it's true.

2 financial tips for the average person from warren buffet

Warren Buffet Interview from Yahoo Finance in 2010 MR. WARREN BUFFET'S FINANCIAL TIPS FOR THE AVERAGE AMERICAN (AVERAGE "ANYONE," REALLY) 1. Avoid Debt. Especially Credit Card Debt. Warren Buffet says, "Well, you never want to owe money you can't pay. I'm basically against debt. I mean, I think the average individual will live a lot happier life if they avoid... They certainly ought to avoid credit card debt. I mean, there's no reason in the world to pay 18% for money... I can't make money paying 18% for money so, why should people up and down the street do that?" [Credit card interest rate in the Philippines is around 3.5% a month so, that's 42% a year!] 2. If You Have Savings, Buy Funds Monthly and Buy Them for the Long-Term. Do Not Dance In and Out of It. Warren Buffet says, "If you have savings, and it's a good idea to have them if you can, just buy index funds and just buy them every month. And don't liste

microsoft mouse receiver stuck in hp usb port

Image
The wireless mouse's nano receiver is stuck in the left-side USB port of the HP laptop. And this is probably why: read jong81's post on reddit . The picture he shared below explained it well enough. It's an old post but if HP still installs that kind of USB port in their machines... it'll be bad. Mine's a Microsoft 3500 mouse and not his Logitech VX Nano so, there must be side-holes on the Microsoft mouse too. Took out my other MS 3500 and checked. There's no hole on this side... But on this side... there's a hole. One hole. So it must really be stuck. Dammit. I'll be checking USBs for holes now... Wonderful. *December 2016, update: I told my sister it's stuck... but then she just pulled it right out! Geez - I'm such a weakling LOL!

win 8.1 clean install usb

Image
I prep'd for it so I'm going to do it, dammit! I prepared on and off for a week: researched, went through the steps and what to expect in my head, learned possible snags and their fixes (from other people's first-hand accounts), prep'd what I needed to use, backed up drivers and my files, wrote down my key and printed out my step-by-step notes. It took a while but I was ready (and pumped). August 5, 2015: Clean install of Win 8.1 via bootable USB. Success! There were only 2 things that my notes didn't cover: There were multiple one-time boot options on my mobo (press F12 to get to this boot menu on GA-A75M-UD2H). There were 4 choices for USB. Obviously, USB-Zip and USB-CDROM were out. I thought, "Oh, USB-HDD but what is this USB-FDD?" [Six minutes later...] Ok, not FDD. Should've went with my gut and picked HDD the first time but no harm done and lesson learned. Uhm, yeah, pick USB-HDD. NOTE: The bootable USB was easily created with Window

June 19-20 about the computer

Image
June 19, 2015, Friday Short story: Hard shutdown. Overclocking error. Messed up display. Restarts by itself. Bluescreens. Then, PC fan turns on but no beep and no post. No joy. Long story: It was on. I just turned the monitor off and forgot about it. I pressed the power button (quick press) thinking I was turning it on which actually shut it down. I realized my mistake. The power light on the tower was still on so I had to do a hard shutdown/shut-off (hold down the power button) so I can start again. On bootup, It showed the "boot failure because of overclocking" screen. I continued as normal. Related: The only other time I had this "overclocking" screen was last month. I remember that the machine took longer than normal to boot. I did a hard shutdown, powered on, saw the overclocking screen which I took a picture of (see image above), continued as normal and was able to work without a glitch. Back to the long story... PART 1: While working, the displ

Aug 22-26 about the computer

8.22.13 Thursday. Pissed off Turned computer on, booted, logged in, few minutes in, hardly started - nothing running really - when it restarted by itself. It booted ok. I didn't log in but clicked "restart" instead so it can fix itself. It, again, booted ok; logged in, saw prompt re:"recovered from serious error" report - typical report when it restarts itself. Then a few, maybe two, minutes later, it froze. Manual restart -- error, can't boot, system32 config missing, repair with os disk, etc. Manual restart again -- nada, no post: fan on, cpu light on; but no beeps, no display. Repeated off/on attempts produced same results: fan runs, no beeps, no display. No joy. (The man told me later that I shouldn't have kept turning it off/on. I'll keep that in mind next time.) Reminds me of last year but without cmos error: October 2012 cmos battery change and hardware cleaning when we discovered the mobo's bubbled capacitors. Recommendation back then

phone memory card problem

the memory card that came with my nokia5800 started acting up after using its usb cable to transfer our vacation pictures. a picture or more, or a music file would be corrupted when i access the gallery; it's every time i access it, even through the file manager. it was frustrating. it was a mess. i had to format it. i did it last night. haven't taken any pictures or put music in yet, but so far, the phone's recognizing it ok. anyway, if it breaks again, i'll need to get a new microsd card - a reliable, branded one like sandisk or kingston. oh joy.

let down | max's delivery

loved ordering in from max's restaurant. food would be delivered hot and in 30 minutes. then again, i did not order later than 6:30pm... until new year's day... new year's day, we called before 8pm and asked for 2 orders of lumpiang shanghai and 1 order of veggie lumpia bites. the veggie lumpia bites were delicious {not umay -oily like i had before). both lumpiang shanghai orders were lukewarm and soggy: one order tasted ok, the other one was sour and inedible. sad. next time i want food from max's, i will not call later than 6:30pm.

cmos batt and mobo

quick update on the recent pc power-on problem ... the computer stopped booting up during the weekend; every time i tried, it would power-on but won't post. figured the cmos battery was finally empty {and maybe something else}. we checked it earlier and saw that: # cmos battery was empty, AND # motherboard had bad capacitors {bubble-topped instead of flat-topped; should've taken a photo, sayang }. after changing cmos battery, cleaning, etc., they got it working again. re:mobo, was advised to let it ride until it dies; then we'll replace it. okay.

blood, hardware, towel

Image
blood accidentally cut myself. it's small; not even painful {yet} hardware cmos battery drained, i suspect. bios prompt; time and date not current. probable reason for pc power-up/boot hiccups. will replace cmos battery asap; should be a cr2032 3v batt. hoping our computer-guy's still around; haven't seen him in years; will see if i can reach him tomorrow. i'd do it myself if i could. dammit. towel happier note, ordered aquazorb towel from zalora. wondered why they're not sending tracking info until it was delivered directly by zalora messenger, not lbc like usual; cool. the aquazorb bath towel is so nice; lightweight and super-absorbent. i might get another one.

sorry router it's not you, maybe

wrote many times about how our router was having connection problems and how we needed to power-cycle to get it working again. but i'm starting to think that our router is not to blame. i'm starting to think that one of the laptops here is causing the router to turn off. well, it doesn't technically "power off." the wi-fi light would turn off in some cases but even the wired desktop is not spared. it kicks us all out and stops connections. good thing that a power-cycle still fixes the problem. i'm starting to notice a pattern, narrowing down which devices are connected when it happens. and the problem happens while a particular laptop is online and they're browsing or whatever it is they're doing online with it. it points to that one specific laptop. all of this is speculation and i need to test it to be sure. problem is i don't want to have anything to do with that laptop. na-da. nil. zilch. i don't even want to ask. i suspect

3-20-12

hello. it is tuesday. i have a lot of things i want to share but need to edit myself before hitting "publish." as this is a journal that i keep reading over and over, i want to it to be light and happy {informative even that i made a 'reminder' tag because my memory's not so sharp as i would like to think} to keep me in good spirits. i can add "rant" to the words that i'm sick of reading, to be honest, and if i use that word again, kmn. mice update moving on, i still use my battery hog of a mouse . i haven't put in a new battery yet since 1-27-12. surprised? of course not. the old ps/2 mouse is the workhorse and the wireless batt-hog only gets to see action if i'm designing {which is like some hours, a number of days every 2 or 3 weeks}. so i save battery money and i know now that using 2 mice at the same time is a-ok. while it's not the setup i hoped for, it's not a huge hassle. brimming with what oh my, the head is brimm

updating the machine, firefox crash

browser crash my old mozilla firefox browser started crashing last week. i can't pinpoint what's causing it yet but i suspect one of my browser apps. so it was time for {a dreaded} an update; but its newest version did not work with my current ff so i needed to update the browser too... toinks! updated but not fixed after updating everything last night {though fairly quick and easy. nothing appears to be missing. so after a few tweaks, i'm up and running}, i went to bed feeling ok about it. then the browser crashed again tonight, ugh! i'm starting to think it's random but something's unstable and i still suspect the same app/add-on. so until they roll out an update with the fix, i'll have to bear with it as it's not like i can disable it and move on - "it" is the password manager so it is pretty important. 4/29/12 update: problem appears to be fixed on march 25, i followed this fix from mozilla support . i remembered that the crashes star

hair trouble

having my hair cut this short is more trouble than i can handle. it gets all over my face when i straighten up after washing over the bathroom sink. i used a hair band and clip but they don't keep the hair back. aunt flo paid a visit and having hair fall on my face made stuff {on my face} worse. aunt flo brings baggage {as many girls will attest} and she usually brings me one present but now, there's more {on places where hair touch my face!}. and all i can do is wait it out, wait till it grows long enough to tie back. wait till the stuff on my face run their course and disappear. i am not cutting my hair this short again!

max's umay food

i have another appetizer that i will not order again (in addition to the sizzling sisig ), it's the veggie lumpia bites. why? nakakaumay. i think our local Max's restaurant will do better with a little less oil in their fried food. nakakaumay kasi ; it coats the tongue and ruins it for other dishes. this may be why i did not like the garlic fried rice i had three months ago too. but if the crab meat fried rice i had earlier is any indication, i know that they can hold back on the oil; i'm thankful it wasn't oily, otherwise, ugh. i can't think of an english word for nakakaumay ... "distasteful" maybe? maybe not? i don't know. don't get me wrong, i think Max's food is YUMMY - just not the dishes i mentioned previously. and our local Max's delivery service is GREAT, so far. and each time i had food delivered, orders were for dishes i haven't tried before. taste test kumbaga .

what's worse

What's worse than a bad blog? A dead one.

doh on test

Tested anti-theft feature on phone. The claim is that if someone tries to use it with an untrusted sim card, i would get an sms alert to this other number that i've assigned. So, off with the trusted sim and in with the untrusted one. NO SMS ALERT RECEIVED. Fudge. And then I realized that that sim card was prepaid and it didn't have any credits in it. DOH! I felt stoo-pid. Then again, am dreading to learn that maybe, the anti-theft thing on my phone doesn't really work. Eek.

reserve complaints

Resist the urge to complain on blog about personal chu-chu. Why? You're setting yourself up to get re-upset when you go back & read it. It's embarrassing and stupid. It's silly. It's a potential "link not found" because you'll probably remove it eventually, messing up your crawl reports. It's more satisfying to rant with a pen and paper, and tearing it up afterwards. Just get over it quickly 'cause it is stupid.

reminder to self: WMP

Hi me, DO NOT roll back windows media player from version 10 to 9. Otherwise, WMP won't open anymore and will show "internal error" instead. WMP10 suddenly quit recognizing my old licensed .wma files -- even when I've got the licenses backed up! It just happened, poof. Troubleshooting headache. Heck, leave it alone. One more reason to dislike updates. Newer isn't always better. Thank goodness for system restore.

reminder to self: flickr

Hi me! Stop uploading to flickr. You have the free account. You can only see 200 of your most recent pictures. Flickr says not to worry and that the old photos are still there -- it's just that they want you to pay $25/year to see them!
